Hello there

Has anyone read the article in Get Surrey about the petition to get the council to change their minds about the property in the high street?
Anyway here it is:
http://www.getsurrey.co.uk/news/s/2053185_petition_for_independent_cinema_in_guildfo rd
I think the council should allow the cinema that area or at least produce another prime spot?
Guildford could use more initiatives like these. This guy is going to create many jobs and also a new vibe in the high street with the bar and caf©. I think it could be funâ?¦:D

I know that Guildford already has a cinema though I have never visited it. I have to say though ODEON in general is really expensive! It would cost the same amount to go out and have a meal! Maybe the other cinema would have cheaper prices? Would be nice to dream eh?

At a time like this I thought the council would love companies to move into their area? Especially if it will attract more shoppers to Guildford!

Exactly, I’m sure they had a good reason to rather go with a retail art shop.
Maybe they think this will make Guildford more art-eee but I find it strange that 600 people are backing the cinema. If it wasn’t a good idea we’d rather see petitions against it. As far as I can understand the Cinema will create more jobs in Surrey (http://www.careers-jobs.eu/surrey-jobs) than the shop would because of the cafÃ?© and bar factor but also it takes more people to run a show like that.
And then again, how many artists do we have with nowhere to promote their stuff?
I’m sure their project is supported by The Arts Council (http://www.artscouncil.org.uk)…

Anyway I hope for the sake of those backing the cinema (and myself) that the tickets won’t be so expensive that normal people won’t be able to go there.
Honestly, if it is the same as a meal – I would rather opt for the meal and wait for the movie’s DVD.
How about you?

A retail art shop? That doesn't sound like a recession proof shop to me lol! Can you say that art is really on the list of things people are going to be spending their money on at the moment?

Maybe they are trying to make Guildford more arty.. they are having an exhibition (http://www.getsurrey.co.uk/news/s/2053363_gallery_marks_guildford_houses_350th_anniv ersary) all to do with Guildford house - who knows? You are spot on though - if residents didn't want a cinema then there would soon be some stirring and cussing haha. To be honest I think it is a good use of an empty building, rather then building over green belt land. What do you think?

I agree totally, you never have to wait long until the DVD comes out. What makes it more expensive is the popcorn and drinks - really overpriced I think. When you add it all up it does become and expensive evening out. Maybe as a treat but I don't think I would go every time there is an interesting movie out.

At least Guildford jobs (http://www.careers-jobs.eu/surrey/guildford-jobs) will be boosted in the meantime. In ways we can be thankful that companies are wanting to move into Guildford. It is quite a good town to shop in though a bit out of the way for me. Hopefully other empty buildings will fill up.

The odeon is pretty central to the town but agree that it is too expensive. mind you vue in camberley isn't much cheaper. :( i remember when you could go to the odeon for £1.50!!! (i was a student then though) lol....
