View Full Version : Council to boost Surrey jobs and business for Olympics
Hiya
Excellent! Surrey County Council will be helping businesses in the county improve their bid documents in order to make part of the £1 billion the Olympic Games will make for the South East. Apparently the Olympic Delivery Authority believes £6 billion will be made through the games.
It sounds so great. But what exactly does this mean for Surrey…and how does this work? I’m not too up to date on how such events work…

Business Link will also be helping with this and they are more established in helping local businesses. THey have an office in Woking that covers the South East and is easy to contact - Tel: 0845 600 9 006.
Thats quite a good thing isn't it?
I think anything that helps anyone right now is welcome!
I have heard of Business Link but have no idea about the local olympic bid thing? Do you know how it will all work?

Haha I am confued too..
I can imagine the sudden tourism will benefit local businesses and increase their profit margins. It may even create a few more jobs in the process (more so in London I imagine??) But don't you think that only certain sectors will benefit from tourism? Retail and catering are bound to benefit but what else (if anything else) ?
Hospitality - Visitors will need somewhere to stay?
I think also auto motive - car hire?
Thanks Emily-O I think that makes sense in a way and Josie I think people won’t want to stay in London during the Olympics if they can get bigger deals in Surrey. It’s not such a far commute and they get to see two different places at the same time. And also I think it will be stupid to travel to the UK and only see the Games. I am confident in thinking that a lot of people will take the opportunity to travel around a bit. Even if money is tight, if they are in the UK…why not visit the South East and take a train to Scotland? £1bn is a lot of money and if this can secure Surrey jobs (http://www.careers-jobs.eu/surrey-jobs) for well after the Olympics, I think all businesses should grab the opportunity. :)
I wonder about car hire though…London isn’t the best city to drive for the first time. I still don’t know my way around and have more than once accidentally driven into Oxford Street and got a major fine. I have know direction whatsoever especially when I am behind the wheel hehehe (don’t tell anybody).
I had a look at Business Link (http://www.businesslink.gov.uk) and it looks fabulous…apart from the Olympics I wonder if everybody knows about this…
Not that now is the time to start up a business but they have such interesting advice and guidelines, its fantastic!!!

Anybody with accomodation near a main London rail line could benefit, as it would be much cheaper than staying in London and easy to get to the events on public transport.Small hotels, B&Bs, even private houses with spare accomodation - which is what happens when Wimbledon tennis is on.
I agree with you Spencer. I really don't think only London central or East London will score from having the Olympics here. x
Surrey will definately benefit as wre have quick links from most places don't you think? Am I am sure people will go out and about and see the local attractions dependant on where they are staying! So it could definately be a good time!

Do you think Surrey has some sights that tourists would want to see?
I know we have Guildford Cathedral - with the time it takes to travel in and out of London that is around half a day out :p The Epsom downs perhaps? I hear that is a good walk!
