View Full Version : Why do we have pay for parking on Sundays?

There was a time (not so long ago) that parking on a Sunday was free, then it was 50p for the day and now it's a pound. Tariffs seem to be going up for weekend parking and parking during the week. Is this the council's doing? If so, are they trying to put us off coming to Guildford? When will the tariffs be going up again?

on most sundays you can park for free up near pewley hill, etc - just depends if you dont mind the slightly longer walk!

Its all about greed. I remember parking in the Bedford Road car park on a Boxing Day when after Christmas sales start. Boxing Day is a 'bank holiday' and along with all the others in the year, one SHOULD NOT have to pay parking.I'm fed up with councils being so greedy. They are bleeding us dry with high council tax charges yet look at the state of the roads around Guildford - they're a disgrace. I'm fed up hearing the same old chestnut of 'saving money' - what I'd like to know is where and on what is all this 'saved money' being saved for? Or - more to the point how much richer are our counsellors getting at our expense ??? Thought to ponder on.

It is the same with bank holidays as well. I used to love parking in Woking for next to nothing and getting a fast train right into London. But slowly the car parking charges on bank holidays are starting to creep up.
Prices always go up and rarely ever go down. Look at petrol for example - it peaked over £1 and thankfully shot down (I cannot remember what made it go down). Then as soon as the government annouced that it was going to inccrease the tax it has been rising ever since. The government are greedy buggers too!

Not the only ones. To be honest Guildford was one of the last towns to charge £1.00 to park on a sunday. I have reletives in Canterbury and Worthing that have been paying to park in their towns for years. I think the charge in guildford has only come into place in the last 2 years or so.

But isn't it a joke? Why should we have to pay for parking at all? Isn't it a service an institution needs to provide us because we chose to do our shopping with them?
Maybe I'm being unrealistic but I promise you I will drive a tad further to go to a store that actually offers me free safe parking.

Well I remember when they first started charging for Sundays and Bank Holidays - it was 50p flat rate - now its the usual charge, they snuck it in hoping to start with that, get us used to it and then bumped it up grrrrrrrrrrr lol
