View Full Version : Shocking: young girls worry and think they are fat
Hi all,
Isn't it sad what the media is doing to young girls? A UK survey on 1000 females aged seven to 21 on the issues they worry about unveiled that girls as young as nine and 10 worry about their weight. Obviously everyone should be healthy and it is good to be aware if your weight is getting out of hand BUT not when you are that young. You should be playing and enjoying your youthful innocence.

No wonder Kate Winslet made such a fuss and sued the Daily Mail, after they said she lied about her excercise regime. She believes women should accept who they are.

I must say I think she is my favourite actress and celebrity...
It is worrying isn't it how younger girls look to the magazines that older women read more and more for thier idea of beauty! Its not even that though - have you seen some of these magazines that are aimed at young teenage girls? They are just as bad as well! It is horrifying but true unfortunetly!
I have seen it first hand with two of my younger sisters! One is 20 and the other 13 and they are both as bad as each other when it comes to talking about thier bellies and bums and stuff! They aren't even a size ten! Its crazy!
I agree Kate Winslet is a good example of a healthy body image and I think more and more people like her should be in the spot light to show these youngsters that its ok to have a few curves here and there you know?
Exactly. I don't have younger sisters but I use to be a nanny for a 12-year-old girl. She bought every magazine, every week and definitely had an eating disorder. she would eat small amounts for meals but she would sneak into the pantry and eat bars and bars of chocolate one after the other and hide all the wrappers...
I guess we can't blame magazines. But who is to blame?
I remember when I was younger I wasn't allowed to wear make-up until I was 17 and just over weekends.
Nowadays girls wear make-up and appear older to boys/men and get away with smoking and drinking at a young age. It just opens up a box of trouble which girls are too young to handle responsibly.
Maybe I am going on like a granny but we need more role models.
If I knew then what I know now I would hold on to being a kid for as long as possible.
Yeah its true you see youngsters in mini skirts with thier slap on looking like they are 18 or 19 yrs old when they are in fact only 12 or 13! Its terrible!
My dad used to make me tak it off if he caught me in make up and only when I got to 16 or 17 he would let me but just a little mascara and lip gloss - anything heavy or that would show up he made me take off even then haha! But I am glad I had those controls in place you know? Without them god knows what would have happened!
Girls these days are starting to dress up and wear make up at the age that I still played with barbies! LOL!
I know, this is shocking. The media plays such a big role in the development of children, yet they don't put restrictions to what they publish.
I am sure they are aware of this, yet they would rather manipulate the children to sell more products or even to advertise a celebrity, for instance Hannah Montana, every young girl wants to be her, but take a closer look at how her young little sister is dressing these days, the shortest little skirts, make-up..... NOT GOOD – Clothes that are not appropriate for little girls her age. This might be cute and all, but people constantly want to know why so many little girls are being raped and killed... the answer is obvious at times!
Hannah Montana, needs to look good as she is always in the spotlight, but this could set a bad example to other girls who wants to be just a skinny as her...
Well Miley Cyrus who plays hannah montana is only 16 so I personally think she is a real bad example for girls in that age group! Surely they should have someone who xcan give out a better image than her?
I mean why all the make up and mini skirts? Not to mention the press you see about her isnt always that great either! Its madness I think personally! Someone else should be employed to be a role model and thoer contracts should stipulate certain regulations etc!!!!
That is weird, and there I thought she was okay, I heard she once said that everyone is making such a fuss about her body (meaning that she is a bit "fat) but she doesn't care blah blah, which made me think she is a good role model.
Is miley cyrus even skinny?
Josie, you won't believe, look at this article.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/politics/liberaldemocrats/6516537/Airbrushed-images-harming-girls-and-boys-experts-say.html
It is so funny because it is exactly what we talked about. I think it is safe to say that everyone knows that cover models are airbrushed, but it is weird to hear that it is actually become such an issue. Can you imagine how cover will look if they don't airbrush it a bit. What would you prefer. Airbrushed glossy or the true photo of so and so as she looks (obviously with hair and make-up done nicely) but imperfections showing?
I think Miley Cyrus is skinny... she is definitely not fat.
I took a look at the link and OMG, that looks really out of proportion, I mean seriously I think it is okay to airbrush a picture to an extent, but making it look so bad is not good, it doesn't even look attractive.
Not only that it set a bad example for teenagers who think that are fat, but people might think that she is anorexic...
I think that I'd prefer magazine covers to be mostly natural and then maybe they could just round off some areas?
That's just scary
http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/showbiz/news/a184286/cyrus-voted-worst-celebrity-influence.html - check out this article - it lets you know about a few of the things she has doen which make her a not so good influence! she has made a few blunders one of them posing topless! At her age it is shocking!
Lilli I tok a quick peek at the link re air brishing etc.... That Ralph Lauren picture is AWFUL! How on earth could they advertise that! Who is really that small without being ill or pre-puberty?
That was not a good example on her behalf... My opinion: Vanity should have never even suggested that type of photo shoot for her, what to say about her parents even allowing it.
However, I do think that being in the spotlight like that leads to stupid decisions being made, especially at that age, maybe she should concentrate more on being 15 and not try to hard to attract an older group, don't you think?
It's funny how all these young and old superstars tend to make these mistakes, don't they ever learn?? They will all be judged, they want to live and EARN like celebrities, then they should learn how to appropriately handle it, don't you agree?
What, oh my soul, not her too...It is so overated posing topless don't you guys think? I see Kanye West is on that list as well. I would put him first. What a weirdo. did u guys see his interseption of Taylor Swift's award the other day? It was ridiculous. And also, Britney is also a mess. I can think of plenty other celebs I will put above Miley Cirus...people who are actually old enough to know better. Miley, I think is still young and can get away with doing uneducated things. When you are over 21, you are just a mess.
That Ralph Lauren picture is totally tampered with. You are right nobody can be as skinny not even the model herself. It is such a joke actually, Ralph Lauren's marketers and photo editors are mad in their heads...It isn't even pretty.
An attractive body to me is a toned one. Where you can see a person is looking after themselves, eating correctly and working out 3 days a week. Not Madonna's weird muscular looking arms...
How about you?
Yes, her too. I must agree with you, posing topless is really overrated, when are people ever going to get over it?? The only time I would consider topless posing as not being overrated, is that I'd rather go naked, than wear fur (http://www.peta.org/MC/printAds_clothing.asp) campaign, that at least adds value to there clothe-less bods.
I can think of allot of other celebrities that I would also put way above her, e.g. Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie, I mean, need I say more?? Miley is only like 15, and the mistakes she made was to choose the wrong scenery for that specific shoot, there decision to put her at number one, makes me think that the decision was a hasty one.
I don't know why they would always want to air brush the photo's so drastically, those ladies are already skinny and beautiful, yet they want to enhance it to an extent where they look like aliens?? lol...
An attractive body is one that is well toned, not to manly, but not to skinny, kind of sporty, but just a bit softer... not like Madonna's, that's way to much toning...she could tone it down a bit.
