View Full Version : Godalming development – create new jobs opportunities for Surrey or a waste?
Hi everyone,
I read in Get Surrey (http://www.getsurrey.co.uk/news/s/2061624_new_plans_for_182_homes_at_godalming_key_s ite) about a plan to build around 180 new homes in Godalming (between Flambard Way, Catteshall Lane and Woolsack Way) which includes shops and office space as well as a couple of cafés is currently still waiting for approval. I’m not to sure if the council will award them permission because they have already been denied.
Some people don’t think the timing is right for the 1,2 and 3 bedroom flats.
But I was under the impression that the South East is under pressure to build plenty of new homes.
Wouldn’t the development make sense then? Instead of moving into green belt areas in other places of Surrey?
I think it is a good idea to combine apartment blocks with shops, offices and cafés. It can also easily NOT work if it isn’t done properly. These shops can be sure that plenty of people will see them on a daily basis and if they offer items which are accessable for the type of people who will live there…why not? Surely it will create plenty of Surrey jobs (http://www.careers-jobs.eu/surrey-jobs) in retail, catering and construction.
Lilly I see this as having good points and bad points! I do agree with the article and comments init as at a time like this how is any of this going to help?
I mean surely they will not make any money with this for some timwe to come? As one person said, it id hard enough to let the shops in the main town area let alone with this new developement?
Im a bit skeptical, but if they don't mind waiting for thier money to come in (and I am talking a few years) then why not? In the meantime you get some jobs created in the area from the developemtn in construction at least!
I do agree that it is better to build on this type of land than on green belt land though! Definately a better idea in my opinion!
It is definitely better than using up green open spaces. I'm not in the know, but I'm wondering if flats count as homes for the south east plan? I think it makes sense to build 200 homes on-top of each other in a couple of seven-storey buildings instead of using up huge spaces of land. They can rather use the area around the buildings as green open spaces.
Then again it is nice to have your own garden and get a pet etc.
I'm just wondering if we should stop focussing on the recession and start thinking of recovery. Not wasting money but just thinking ahead to what will be beneficial in the next two years for the county... I'm still very "Stupid" when it comes to the economy, but I think the development can work ONLY because the pressure on house development in the south east!
The thing with all this is, in my opinion anyway, the whole process of getting a mortgage has changed and become so much harder that these days less and less people are able to get on the property ladder! I am one of them! I seriously think the peice of property needs to come down to enable the average person to be able to afford it! I mean I have been paying someone else's mortgage for years and because the rent is so high I have never been able to save for a deposit! Its a no win situation really!
I know how you feel! I'm sure nobody in my neigborhood attempts to rent a flat alone. But somehow, I am trying to make it work. It is too small to share with a single friend and the location is to good for me to concider moving. Let's just be lucky that we have a roof over our heads ;)
Oh I definately agree with you there Lilly!
I am lucky enough that we rent a 3 bed house with a garden and all but its between four of us! So the downside there is that we have to share with others! I often wonder what will happen when we have kids and go it alone? How will we afford a place to live?
The pro's and con's of flatmates...rent is fantastic (in a sense...more money to spend on other stuff) but you can never just have a romantic evening in for two unless you organise it that way. I used to live an uncomplicated life with my ex flatmate, my boyfriend only visited over weekends and most of the time we went away and stayed somewhere else (the flat felt to cramped with the 3 of us). But then she got a boyfriend who just moved himself in and he was so lazy. Never washing his dishes or the tub for that matter. After 10 months I decided I would rather have nothing to eat then share a single moment in his presence...
Anyway, I still get angry when I think about it...really silly of me ;)
Affordable housing needs to be kicked up a notch. There are too many of us in the same predicament...can you imagine having to share a house with other people even when you have a baby or they have a baby...too weird!
Oh god I would hate to share with a bum like that - you'd feel like your constantly nagging wouldnt you?
I would rather starve as well! Trust me I have paid higher rent all my life just because I would rather have a certain amount of space! No way I could rent a room and live with strangers etc you know?
Oh and I certainly dont want to be sharing when I or my housemate has a child - thats a time when you definately need to be on your own with your partner and baby - oh and cats in my case hehe!
Definitely, I don't think its fair to either party, not to you or the couple who has the baby. Last year (whoops, I will have to remember to say last, last year :) we went on holiday with the entire family, including my brother and his 2-year-old daughter. During certain hours of the day, I wasn't allowed to talk (seeing as my voice "carries") because his precious angel was sleeping. But during the evening when we wanted to watch telly it was perfectly fine for the little angel to play around with her plastic hoover toy (which makes a hoovering sound louder than the telly). It's fine to cope with these kind of horrors over holiday, but imagine living with it, day in day out. MADNESS.
There is a area in west London which might get turned into almost 4000 homes (1000 affordable) on a former gasworks site. Apparently the residents are against it but I think they miss the opportunities it will create. The development will include retail space, restaurants and a hotel which will boost the area and jobs (http://www.careers-jobs.eu)!!!
Haha poor you Lilly! Its times like that you need a room with a tv to escape to or another play room to put the kids in haha! I am mean but oh well lol!
Wow that sound like an opportunity! Why are residents moaning if they are building on an existing site? Should it not make things better than the gas work site?????
I tell you, kids! Madness. My dogs are enough for me to handle at the moment.
I can't remember why residents were against the development, I guess traffic problems...it always is. But to be fair traffic is a mess in London! Have you driven around there before?
Hey Lilly, as a passenger I have yes but I have yet to actually pass my test! I have never even done it! Its on my to-do list though hehe!
I don't think traffic is a great excuse really do you? I am sure they would have a traffic regardless?
