In an operation that took 22 hours, the United Stateâ??s first face transplant has taken place. The patientâ??s face is now mostly that of a cadaver, making it the most complex fact transplant of the four that have now taken place worldwide. So far the patient, who had undergone a trauma that left her unable to eat or breathe on her own, has not rejected the face and she should regain feeling in 6 months and the face should be fully functioning in 12 months.
As transplants of all kinds are becoming more common, do you think they are the right thing to do? There seem to be many reports of extreme psychological damage, which make it all seem like quite a risk, on top of the risks of rejection and just the general risks of surgery. And now, with there being ideas of the â??opt outâ?? system for donors (which would possibly see an increase in revolutionary transplants), do you agree with that, or think it should stay as it is, as an â??opt inâ?? system?
