Default Airtrack is back

BAA / Heathrow Airports Ltd have submitted the application to build the line from Staines to Heathrow. Once it is built we will have 16 trains an hour going through Egham. The full-barrier level crossing gates are currently down up to 3 minutes per train. That's 16 trains at Egham Station level crossing, 16 trains at Pooley Green level crossing, and 16 an hour at Thorpe Road level crossing. Anyone who thinks it's bad now, with 8 trains an hour, needs to join our campaign for a tunnel or bridge.

Hey Meher, please can you tell me where the details to your campaign are? I would be quite interested to sign a petition or so!
Out of interest how would this affect all the other trains that go through Egham? Would there be train congestion on the line meaning the good old Reading to London train will have its journey time increased?

The idea is the trains would fit into spare slots in the current schedule, but there is some question about whether this can actually work. There have been weasle-words about whether all the airtrack trains will be extra or whether some will replace existing stops or services, but so far no suggestion that other trains will be delayed.

On the other hand the line will be working much nearer to its capacity so exactly as Heathrow is prone to delays because it has no spare capacity to accommodate minor problems, inevitably that will happen on the train line too.

The real issue for Egham is that there are Three airtrack lines: Heathrow -Reading, Heathrow - Guildford, Heathrow - Waterloo. But all the westbound trains have to go through Egham's four level crossings before the lines for Guildford and Reading divide, so we go from 8 trains an hour to 16, with the crossings closed for between 2 and 3 minutes every time.

This forum won't allow me to post links but if you google airtrack egham you will find a website where you can download a letter, put your name and address at the top, and email it off. Petitions are no good, no matter how many signatures a petition has, it is counted as One objection.

That is a fair point, if every complaint was individual it may spark some attention.
I entirely see your point about the crossings, it does not seem sustainable at all. Have the local authorities mentioned any ideas to ease traffic flow? I hope they have at least acknowledged that there is a problem!

You can post links, meher, but only after posting 5 times in total on the site when you are a new member. Once any member is established as a regular contributor they can put links into their posts. In the meantime, here is the link for the Airtrack campaign - http://www.egham-airtrack.co.uk
